Potential Third Basemen Targets for the Yankees Following DJ LeMahieu's Designation

The Yankees are exploring options at third base after designating DJ LeMahieu for assignment. Here are five players they could consider acquiring at the trade deadline.

In a move that seemed inevitable once Jazz Chisholm Jr. moved back to second base, the Yankees designated veteran DJ LeMahieu for assignment. They owe him about $22 million through the end of next season, but the soon-to-be 37-year-old’s bat and glove have declined significantly in recent years, and injuries are accumulating. LeMahieu’s capability was limited.

Ironically, LeMahieu is hitting .467 in July, but overall he is batting .266/.338/.336 with two homers in 45 games this season. Those numbers align with his performance in recent years. His strong defense used to justify his presence, but it is no longer up to par.

The Yankees require a third baseman at the trade deadline even before moving on from LeMahieu. Oswald Peraza, a slick-fielding but light-hitting utility player, is expected to be at the hot corner for the moment, with additional playing time for Jorbit Vivas and JC Escarra. The Yankees have a long shopping list for the trade deadline, which includes third base and addressing injuries in the pitching staff, which also affects players like Gerrit Cole, Fernando Cruz, Luis Gil, and Clarke Schmidt.

“I want to bring in a starter, some relievers, and an infielder if possible,” GM Brian Cashman stated Wednesday. “But that’s a long list, and I’m uncertain how active we can be at the deadline. We will attempt to be active and secure improvements.”

Here are five third basemen that the Yankees might consider pursuing:

  1. Nolan Arenado, Cardinals

    • The biggest name among third base trade targets. Arenado has shown signs of decline but would still be an upgrade.
  2. Ke’Bryan Hayes, Pirates

    • A strong defender, though his offensive output has been lacking.
  3. Ryan McMahon, Rockies

    • Good defensively, but his stats have benefited from Coors Field.
  4. Eugenio Suárez, Diamondbacks

    • A complete package and a middle-order guy that could bolster the lineup significantly.
  5. Ramón Urías, Orioles

    • A solid player under control, likely to be available during trade actions.
