Stephen Curry's Future in the NBA: How Much Longer Will He Play?
With his current contract nearing an end, Stephen Curry discusses his plans for retirement and his future in the game.
If Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry were to retire tomorrow, he would undoubtedly be a first ballot Hall of Famer. As a four-time NBA champion, two-time MVP, and eleven-time All-Star, he has nothing left to prove. However, as he turns 37, questions about his retirement loom.
Despite these questions, Curry is not actively planning his retirement. When asked about his longevity in a recent interview, he stated, “I don’t know. I’m just taking it two years at a time. That’s what I have left on my contract right now.”
Curry is set to make $62.6 million in a one-year extension before he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2027. Since being drafted by the Warriors in 2009 with the 7th overall pick, he has spent his entire career with the team.
Curry’s father, Dell Curry, shared his thoughts, believing that it will ultimately be Steph’s decision when to retire. He noted, “A lot of guys play until the teams or the league tell you, ‘We can’t use your services anymore.’ I think he could be well into his 40s because he can shoot the ball and it requires that you have to guard him, making space for others on the court. So, I think that decision will be totally up to him.”
Last season, Curry averaged 24.5 points per game, the lowest since the 2013-2014 season, and shot below 40% from three-point range for just the second time in his career, indicating some decline. Still, he shows no signs of stopping just yet.
