Jalen Ramsey Takes on Legacy Jersey Number for Steelers

Ramsey officially adopts the jersey number worn by another Steelers veteran.

Shortly after the Steelers officially signed Aaron Rodgers, punter Corliss Waitman willingly relinquished the No. 8 jersey to accommodate his new teammate. It seems that Jalen Ramsey, the recently acquired cornerback, has received a similar gesture from the other Steelers punter.

Following the announcement of his trade to the Steelers, Ramsey shared an image on X showing his last name on a Steelers No. 5 jersey, which until then was held by Cameron Johnston. The Steelers confirmed the shift with a post on X featuring the former All-Pro sporting the No. 5 jersey, captioned “digit drop.”

This development means that Ramsey, who changed from No. 20 to No. 5 in 2021 after the NFL updated its uniform number regulations, will wear his desired number; Johnston’s current listing on the Steelers’ official website still shows him wearing No. 5. Therefore, it’s likely he will select a new number during the lead-up to the regular season.

On another note, Johnston appears to be fully recovered after suffering a season-ending knee injury in Week 1 of the last season. He actively participated in the Steelers’ voluntary workouts and mandatory minicamp.

“I just really appreciate his mindset regarding his rehabilitation,” said Steelers coach Mike Tomlin about Johnston, who signed a three-year contract with the team last year. “He remains engaged throughout the year and was a positive influence on Corliss and others. He was consistently present. He’s a true professional, and I admire that.”
