Tobin Heath, Two-Time World Cup Champion, Declares Retirement

After years of battling injuries, Tobin Heath announces her retirement from professional soccer following an illustrious career.

Tobin Heath, a key member of the U.S. Women’s National Team that won the Women’s World Cup in 2015 and 2019, officially announced her retirement on Thursday, signaling the conclusion of a remarkable career.

Heath played her last professional match with the Seattle Reign in August 2022, where they triumphed over North Carolina Courage 4-1. Her final appearance for the national squad occurred during a friendly against South Korea in October 2021. In the later stages of her career, Heath contended with a severe knee injury that ultimately hindered her return to the sport.

“Over New Year’s, I came to fully accept that I wouldn’t be playing, which was a lengthy process of about two or three years of coming to terms with it,” Heath shared on her podcast. “I tried everything to return, spending significant amounts on treatments and surgeries, one of which was highly complicated. Despite believing I could come back, the signs were unmistakable; I just struggled to accept that chapter was closing.”

Heath, who earned 181 caps for the USWNT, garnered two World Cup titles, two Olympic gold medals, and was named U.S. Soccer’s Female Athlete of the Year in 2016. Alongside her national achievements, she also excelled at the club level, clinching two NWSL championships with the Portland Thorns and winning accolades with Manchester United, Arsenal, and Paris Saint-Germain. Her contributions include 36 goals and 42 assists for the national team, with a notable goal in the 2015 World Cup final against Japan, which the U.S. won 5-2.

Recently, Heath has been involved in initiatives beyond the pitch, including her podcast with Christen Press. She’s also a unique voice on FIFA’s technical study group for the men’s Club World Cup, which draws to a close this weekend.
