The Houston Astros have promoted their top remaining prospect, middle infielder Brice Matthews, just before their match against the Texas Rangers at Daikin Park.
Matthews, aged 23, was the Astros’ first-round draft pick (28th overall) from the 2023 MLB Draft, having previously played primarily as a third baseman and shortstop. However, he has recently taken on a role at second base during 58 out of his 73 games in Triple-A this season, likely due to Isaac Paredes occupying third and Jeremy Peña securing shortstop at the major league level.
Notably, the Astros are currently challenged with injuries in their middle infield, as Peña and second baseman Brendan Rodgers are both on the injured list. Mauricio Dubon and Zack Short have been taking shortcuts up the middle, with Altuve also sharing duties at second base.
As of now, Matthews has a hitting record of .283/.400/.476 with 12 doubles, five triples, 10 home runs, 39 RBIs, and 25 stolen bases in Triple-A.
