Angels Sign Yoán Moncada to One-Year, $5 Million Contract

The Los Angeles Angels have reportedly signed infielder Yoán Moncada to a short-term deal, aiming for a revitalized season after injury struggles.

Free-agent infielder Yoán Moncada has agreed to a one-year contract worth $5 million with the Los Angeles Angels, reports the New York Post. The team has not yet confirmed the signing.

Moncada, 29, hit free agency after the White Sox declined his $25 million team option for 2025. Injuries have plagued Moncada in recent seasons, including a left adductor strain in 2024, limiting him to only 12 games last year.

Previously viewed as a high-potential player, Moncada was the key part of the trade that sent Chris Sale from the White Sox to the Red Sox.

Moncada’s notable season in 2019 garnered MVP votes and he recorded a 5.2 WAR. However, his performance has declined since then, with recent statistics reflecting challenges with both power and on-base percentage.

The Angels, coming off a 63-99 record last season, see Moncada as a depth option at third base behind Anthony Rendon, who has been frequently sidelined over the past few years.

“Moncada is a difficult player to pin down…Teams will understandably line up to see what his game looks like in a better environment.”

Translation: Moncada’s recent play has led to skepticism over his ability to return to form. However, his talent and potential could flourish in a supportive system.
