EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Chelsea displayed an impressive performance at MetLife Stadium, overpowering Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) with a decisive 3-0 victory to secure the inaugural Club World Cup title at the new tournament format.
Chelsea’s approach was audacious and quick, scoring all their goals in the first half and preventing PSG from finding their rhythm.
“Going into the game straightaway, we set the tone,” Chelsea’s Levi Colwill remarked afterward, adding, “We pressed the life out of them. This was our last match of the season, and I didn’t want to leave feeling like I could have given more for the team.”
Under the guidance of coach Enzo Maresca, Chelsea adapted their strategy effectively, aiming to exploit spaces left by PSG. Their tactical discipline paid off considerably as they quickly netted two goals through Cole Palmer before extending their lead just before halftime with a third goal from Joãao Pedro.
The intensity shown by Chelsea in the first half forced PSG to face significant fatigue as time ticked away. The match concluded with a moment of drama as Joao Neves received a red card during the final minutes, adding more tension to the already high-stakes encounter.
“PSG is a team that can overpower you if given too much space,” noted Maresca. “We had to be aggressive and maintain control, which we successfully managed during crucial moments of the game.”
Chelsea’s win signals their capability to compete against top European clubs. After years of transitioning and overcoming roster challenges, the club can celebrate this achievement as a promising step into the future.
