Greg McElroy's Claims Spark Speculation About Nick Saban's Return to Coaching
Former quarterback Greg McElroy suggests based on a credible source that Nick Saban may come out of retirement to coach college football again.
It has been 18 months since Nick Saban announced his retirement from coaching. In that time, he joined ESPN as a TV analyst, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, and had Alabama’s field renamed after him. While the Crimson Tide proceed with Kalen DeBoer, is Saban actually finished coaching?
During a Monday morning interview on the “Mac and Cube” show in Birmingham, former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy, who currently works with Saban, claimed he spoke to someone who strongly believes that Saban will return to college football.
“A very much in the know person that I have a lot of respect for and have spent a lot of time around, and just really, really admire – they seem to think Nick Saban is not done coaching,” McElroy said, according to 247Sports. “He’s pretty adamant that he thinks Nick Saban will be coaching again.”
When asked about the identity of this person, McElroy remarked, “If it wasn’t someone notable, I would never say a word. He is of firm belief that Nick Saban will coach in college football again.”
If Saban opts to come back to coaching, interest in his services is expected. After all, he built one of the most dominant dynasties in college football history at Tuscaloosa, securing six national championships from 2007-2023. Saban will turn 74 in October, yet if the landscape of college football evolves quickly, it could inspire him. Who wouldn’t be interested in seeing Saban challenge Bill Belichick in a recruiting rivalry?
While this is just one perspective, it holds enough significance for McElroy to share the information.
