Bill Goldberg concluded his wrestling career last weekend with a loss to world champion Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event. Despite being a long-anticipated retirement match, Goldberg expressed dissatisfaction with WWE’s approach leading up to this moment.
Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Goldberg voiced his disappointment regarding how the promotion managed the buildup to his match:
“I would have loved for them to announce it in January and have a build-up to it… Instead, they chose to do it with three weeks’ notice.”
— Bill Goldberg
(Translation: Je souhaiterais qu’ils l’auraient annoncé en janvier, avec suffisamment de préparation pour honorer ma carrière… Au lieu de cela, ils ont choisi de l’annoncer trois semaines à l’avance.)
Goldberg, who made a major impact in wrestling since 1997, is known for his powerful presence in the ring and a career that included multiple championships, including the WCW world title. Upon joining WWE after WCW’s closure, he enjoyed a second wave of success, becoming a universal champion and earning a place in the WWE Hall of Fame in 2018.
However, he repeatedly conveyed his dissatisfaction with how his departure from wrestling was handled, particularly when the broadcast interrupted his farewell speech:
“I’m angry about how I went out because I invested so much effort, yet the recognition I deserved was missing.”
— Bill Goldberg
(Translation: Je suis en colère sur la façon dont je suis sorti, car j’ai mis tant d’efforts et le respect que je mérite me faisait défaut.)
“… There are countless ways it could have been better. They cut me off just 30 seconds into my speech. A gesture like that is unacceptable.”
