The inaugural FIFA Club World Cup has concluded with Chelsea triumphing, capturing the championship by defeating PSG with a score of 3-0 at MetLife Stadium. As excitement builds for the upcoming World Cup next summer in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, details about the next Club World Cup in 2029 are emerging.
Additional Teams Taking Part?
Currently, FIFA has not announced any modifications to the core structure, expected to feature 32 teams competing in 2029. However, speculation suggests that numerous European clubs have pressed FIFA to consider expanding to a 48-team format, mirroring the FIFA World Cup. This expansion could enhance interest and elevate prize winnings, crucial for clubs participating this summer.
Teams Already Qualified
Regarding the current format of 32 teams, four clubs have secured their place for the 2029 tournament:
- PSG (France) - UEFA Champions League 2024-25 winners
- Pyramids FC (Egypt) - CAF Champions League 2024-25 winners
- Al-Ahli (Saudi Arabia) - AFC Champions League 2024-25 winners
- Cruz Azul (Mexico) - CONCACAF Champions Cup 2025 winners
Future Hosting Locations
Though there’s no official word on the host nation for the 2029 event, several countries have expressed interest, including Australia and Brazil. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has hinted at the possibility of the U.S. hosting again, with Morocco, Spain, and Portugal also considered, particularly in light of their upcoming 2030 World Cup preparations. Qatar has also shown interest, which raises potential scheduling concerns for European leagues, as seen during the 2022 World Cup.
