Bill Belichick Responds to Robert Kraft’s Comments on NFL Risks

Belichick asserts he was the one to take the big risk by joining the Patriots, countering Kraft's remarks about their initial trade.

During an event in New York, Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, recalled his bold decision to trade a first-round pick in 1999 to hire Bill Belichick. He termed this action a ‘big risk’, considering Belichick’s previous record with the Cleveland Browns, which was not favorable.

However, Bill Belichick pushed back against this narrative, stating that he was the one who faced the greatest risk by accepting the coaching position. Belichick pointed out that the team was in disarray under the former coach Pete Carroll and was struggling to manage its salary cap, which restricted his ability to make necessary roster changes.

“As I told Robert multiple times through the years, I took a big risk by taking the New England Patriots head coaching job… I already had an opportunity to be the Head Coach of the New York Jets, but the ownership situation was unstable,” Belichick stated to ESPN.

Regardless of the debate on who truly took the greater risk, their controversial move led to successful outcomes. After a rough start to his first season, Belichick ultimately led the Patriots to numerous victories, including six Super Bowl titles, establishing one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history. His tenure saw no losing record between the years 2001 and 2020, while the team made playoffs consistently from 2009 to 2019.

In January 2024, Belichick and the Patriots mutually parted ways. Subsequently, he was hired in December 2024 as the head coach at North Carolina, stepping into college football for the first time.
