Kevin Durant Declined Timberwolves Trade; Here's What the Suns Might Have Received

Kevin Durant expressed no interest in joining the Timberwolves while the Suns were considering trades for him. Details have emerged about what the Suns could have gained from the Timberwolves.

Kevin Durant reportedly rejected any interest in joining the Minnesota Timberwolves while the Phoenix Suns were considering trading the former MVP this offseason. This trade discussion has resurfaced with details on what the Suns might have received from the Timberwolves if the deal had gone through.

According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN, there were extensive conversations about a five-player trade before Durant ultimately landed with the Houston Rockets. The potential deal would have included Minnesota’s center Rudy Gobert, guard Donte DiVincenzo, forward Terrence Shannon Jr., along with the 17th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

The tumult around Durant’s trade has also led to Bradley Beal accepting a buyout from the Suns before moving to the Los Angeles Clippers. Should the trade to Minnesota had gone ahead, Beal would have found a spot in the lineup next to Devin Booker, likely resulting in him staying with the Suns.

Despite the Timberwolves originally being favored to land Durant, other teams like Miami, San Antonio, and Houston emerged as more desirable locations as discussions continued. The outcome of these negotiations demonstrated Durant’s influence with the Suns, which eventually allowed Beal to explore options with other teams. Following this, Phoenix finalized the deal sending Durant to Houston, securing Jalen Green as a key addition to their roster for the upcoming season, alongside Dillon Brooks and other draft picks.
