Linebacker T.J. Watt has proved his worth to the Pittsburgh Steelers since being drafted in the first round in 2017, earning accolades such as seven-time Pro Bowler and NFL Defensive Player of the Year. As he approaches the last year of his contract, there’s speculation about whether the Steelers will renew his deal.
Cameron Heyward, a fellow linebacker and lifelong Steeler, believes Watt deserves a lucrative new contract, hoping he ends his career in Pittsburgh. Although Heyward mentioned he and Watt don’t discuss contracts, he voiced his strong support for Watt.
“That’s my brother. I want that dude to get paid what he deserves,” Heyward expressed. “I hope this year is not the last time we play together. We’ve created a lot of havoc together, and I just want to see that guy continue to be a Pittsburgh Steeler.”
Heyward sees Watt as a vital part of the Steelers’ defense, noting that even opposing teams focus significantly on him due to his explosive play style. “He’s one of the fiercest players in our league and commands respect throughout,” he added.
Watt’s potential trade talk remains a concern for Heyward, who plans to speak with general manager Omar Khan if serious discussions arise.
“I don’t think it helps our team to trade a guy like that,” he stated. “This cannot happen.”
If negotiations don’t progress, Heyward may need to advocate for Watt as the team explores his value further.
In comparison with other players, Watt seeks to become the highest-paid non-quarterback, a title currently held by Myles Garrett with $40 million in average salary.
