Pelican's Rookie Derik Queen to Miss Training Camp After Wrist Surgery
Derik Queen, a rookie for the New Orleans Pelicans, faces an extended recovery following wrist surgery.
New Orleans Pelicans rookie Derik Queen is expected to miss the initial phase of training camp due to wrist surgery performed on Friday, aimed at repairing a torn ligament in his left wrist.
Queen sustained the injury during an NBA Summer League match against the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday. The Pelicans announced he would undergo another evaluation in approximately 12 weeks, which will likely be after the start of training camps.
The surgical procedure targeted the torn scapholunate ligament, conducted by Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles.
Standing at 6 feet 9 inches, Queen was recognized as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year after he averaged 16.5 points during his time at Maryland. His crucial buzzer-beater against Colorado State in the NCAA Tournament facilitated the Terrapins’ advancement to the Sweet 16, where they eventually lost to the national champions, Florida.
He was selected with the 13th overall pick in the draft by Atlanta, subsequently traded to the Pelicans.
