Spain to Host Ryder Cup in 2031: A Historic Return After 34 Years

Spain secures the honor of hosting the Ryder Cup, marking its second time after a 34-year hiatus.

Ryder Cup Europe announced the hosting details for the 2031 Ryder Cup event on Tuesday. After a gap of 34 years, the esteemed tournament will return to Spain, with the Stadium Course at Camiral in Costa Brava set as the venue for this prestigious event.

“Today’s announcement not only highlights Camiral as a premier European venue but also acknowledges the significant impact that Spanish golf has had on the illustrious history of the Ryder Cup,” stated Guy Kinnings, the chief executive of the European Tour Group. “The Ryder Cup has grown immensely since Spain last hosted it in 1997. It is now one of the most significant sporting events globally, creating considerable economic advantages and global visibility for its host region and nation. We are thrilled to bring it to Costa Brava and Barcelona for the first time and to Spain for the second.” (Translation: Today’s announcement not only recognizes Camiral as one of Europe’s leading venues, but also the considerable contribution Spanish golf has made to the proud history of the Ryder Cup.)

Spain’s last Ryder Cup hosting was led by Seve Ballesteros, who captained a victorious European team at Valderrama in 1997. The upcoming 2031 edition will officially make it the first country in continental Europe to host the Ryder Cup twice. England has hosted the event multiple times, with Scotland hosting it twice, while France, Ireland, and Italy have done so once since its inception in 1927.

Spain boasts a rich Ryder Cup history, with the likes of Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazábal spearheading its golfing achievements. The duo amassed a total of 12 points as teammates and both served as victorious captains. Notably, Olazábal was the captain during the memorable comeback known as “The Miracle at Medinah” in 2012.

Recent competitors from Spain include Jon Rahm and Rafa Cabrera Bello, contributing to a group of 11 Spanish golfers who have participated in the Ryder Cup. The only country with more representatives is England. Sergio Garcia holds the record for most points in Ryder Cup history with a staggering 28.5 points earned over 10 appearances.
