LeBron James Considers Mavericks Before Accepting Lakers Option
LeBron James, the four-time NBA champion, contemplated leaving the Lakers for the Mavericks, according to reports.
LeBron James picked up his player option to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers. This move, however, came after considering a potential shift to the Dallas Mavericks, as reported by John Hollinger of The Athletic.
According to the report, “there were whispers in league circles about LeBron James having eyes for Dallas.” Despite the allure of joining the Mavericks, the four-time NBA MVP chose to secure his lucrative $52.6 million contract with the Lakers instead of opting for a lesser deal with the Mavericks.
In Dallas, James could have reunited with Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis, and potentially played alongside the top overall draft pick Cooper Flagg. James expressed confidence that Flagg “will be amazing” with the Mavericks, as noted in the reports.
Earlier in July, James opted not to clarify rumors regarding his relationship with the Lakers’ management. ESPN reportedly prompted him to share his thoughts during an on-camera interview but he declined the opportunity. He stated, “I ain’t got nothing to talk about,” according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
Los Angeles has addressed its center position this summer with the acquisition of Deandre Ayton, while losing Dorian Finney-Smith to the Houston Rockets. They also re-signed center Jaxson Hayes and added former Sacramento Kings forward Jake LaRavia.
Luka Doncic remains a key player under contract, looking toward a long-term extension, while also considering the situation surrounding Bronny James, who is signed through the 2027-28 season with a team option.
“We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career,” said agent Rich Paul. “He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what’s best for him.”
