UFC veteran Ben Askren has successfully left the hospital after a double lung transplant, marking a triumphant exit from a long and challenging medical journey. Askren, aged 41, was hospitalized for nearly two months due to severe pneumonia before undergoing the transplant. Although still facing mobility issues, he expressed relief at reuniting with his family.
In a video shared online, Askren stated:
“Day 59, I’m out, with my beautiful wife, supporter. Man, that was a long journey, and it’s not over because I still can’t really walk. I’ve got to re-teach myself to do that, among many other things.”
Askren’s journey involved significant challenges, including a poignant moment where he mentioned he had “died four times” during his hospitalization and lost about 50 pounds over 45 days. Thankfully, he seems to have overcome the worst part of this experience.
The athlete extended his gratitude to the combat sports community for their support, notably reflecting on those who helped fund his medical expenses. Ben Askren was a two-time NCAA Division I champion and has held titles in Bellator and ONE Championship before competing in the UFC. He is recognized for facing notable fighters such as Robbie Lawler, Jorge Masvidal, and Jake Paul.
