Bobby Wagner on Terry McLaurin's Absence: 'Let Business Handle Business'

The Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner weighs in on Terry McLaurin's ongoing contract negotiations amidst his training camp holdout.

While Terry McLaurin and Washington’s front office navigate contract talks amidst the wide receiver’s training camp holdout, veteran Bobby Wagner addressed the issue this week. Wagner, who recently re-signed with the Commanders, expressed his perspective on the ongoing situation.

Wagner stated, “I think guys like to, at least myself, it’s a business and some business is not your business… you let them take care of the things they need to handle, focusing on your own responsibilities. Understand he’s part of the team and holds significant weight in the locker room. He’s a remarkable figure within our community and our locker room.”

Wagner emphasized the sentiment of waiting for the business side to be resolved, adding, “We hope for a resolution and when it occurs, we celebrate, bring him back, and move forward. Let business take care of business.”

Coming off another impressive season with 132 tackles, 2 sacks, and 4 passes defended in 17 games, Wagner continues to be a pivotal leader within the Commanders organization. McLaurin’s absence during training camp raises concerns as he’s entering the final year of a three-year, $71 million extension. General Manager Adam Peters indicated the team’s commitment to resolving McLaurin’s contract issue.

According to Peters, “Everyone in the building values Terry very much and we’ve had recent talks with the intention of finalizing a deal soon.” McLaurin’s situation remains a significant talking point as he is positioned as the 17th highest-paid receiver in the league for the upcoming season at $15.5 million.

To potentially fill the gap during McLaurin’s holdout, the Commanders signed free agent Tay Martin this week after his time spent on the Tennessee Titans’ practice squad last fall. With McLaurin boasting a franchise-record 13 touchdown receptions last season, he played a critical role in Jayden Daniels earning NFL Rookie of the Year honors.
