Wrestling icon Hulk Hogan died on Thursday at the age of 71. Perhaps the most well-known and recognizable wrestler in the history of the industry, he was a major catalyst in the growth of the World Wrestling Federation throughout the 1980s.
Hogan, a six-time heavyweight champion in the WWE (WWF at the time) and World Championship Wrestling (WCW), was at the center of “Hulkamania.” That movement led to an explosion of popularity for professional wrestling at large, making Hogan an American sports superstar.
Throughout his career, Hogan delivered some of the greatest moments in wrestling history. His bodyslam of Andre the Giant at WrestleMania III is iconic, and the rematch between the two legends on “WWF The Main Event” holds the record for the most-watched event in wrestling history with 33 million viewers.
Hogan was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005, and he was later inducted a second time as part of the nWo.
While he was most famous as a wrestler, Hogan’s influence extended beyond the ring. He appeared in movies like “Rocky III” and starred in his reality show titled “Hogan Knows Best” following his retirement.
When news of Hogan’s passing broke, reactions flooded in from past greats and current stars alike. Here are some notable tributes:
WWE
“WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away. One of pop culture’s most recognizable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s. WWE extends its condolences to Hogan’s family, friends, and fans.” — WWE (@WWE)
The WWE likely would not be in its current position without Hulk Hogan’s rise in the 1980s.
Vince McMahon
“The world lost a treasure today. Hulk Hogan was the greatest WWE Superstar of all time, loved and admired around the world. He was a trailblazer, the first performer to transition from being a wrestling star into a global phenomenon. Today, we pray for him.” — Vince McMahon (@VinceMcMahon)
Ric Flair
“I am absolutely shocked to hear about the passing of my close friend @HulkHogan! He was an incredible athlete, talent, friend, and father! Our friendship has meant the world to me.” — Ric Flair (@RicFlairNatrBoy)
His impact on the wrestling industry will never be forgotten, and he leaves behind a storied legacy.
