Jonathan Kuminga Takes His Time Before Re-signing with Warriors Amidst Stalemate
Jonathan Kuminga is in no rush to sign a deal with the Golden State Warriors as ongoing negotiations stall.
The Golden State Warriors haven’t made any moves this offseason, primarily due to their anticipation of a resolution regarding restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga. According to Shams Charania, who shared insights on NBA Today, there seems to be no end in sight to the deadlock. During a workout in Miami, Kuminga expressed that he isn’t in a hurry to finalize a deal and is not satisfied with the current offers from the Warriors.
“He did tell me that he is in absolutely no rush to do a deal with the Warriors right now, and he's not accepting their current offers,” Charania noted. “He added that he wants to continue exploring options with his agent Aaron Turner, whether that’s continuing conversations with the Warriors or sign-and-trade options available to him.”
Kuminga is weighing potential offers from teams like the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings, who are eager to provide him significant playing time and a starting role, which is what he desires.
Currently, Kuminga’s situation reflects the challenge many restricted free agents face this season as teams hold back from making offers, putting pressure on the Warriors without risk. Both Kuminga and the Warriors are hesitant to concede, resulting in a stalled offseason for Golden State.
The window for Kuminga to accept a qualifying offer still remains, allowing him the flexibility of an unrestricted free agency next season. However, he carries the risk of injury that could jeopardize his future earnings.
The probabilities of a breakthrough might remain low until closer to training camp, thus making this deadlock a significant talking point in the NBA offseason.
