LATROBE, Pa. – The Pittsburgh Steelers made a significant move as they commenced their second training camp practice by signing Chuck Clark, a veteran safety who previously played for the New York Jets and began his NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens.
At 30 years old, Clark is recognized for his versatility, having played both safety positions throughout his career. Despite battling injuries over the past two seasons, he has demonstrated his capability to start productively when fit.
“Highly familiar with his intangibles,” said Mike Tomlin regarding the acquisition of Clark. “He’s got a really good relationship with the game. He’s a hard worker, and a strong communicator. His football character comes highly recommended.”
The significance of signing a player with a rival like the Ravens has always drawn curiosity.
“I care less about who they played for,” Tomlin commented. “What matters more is that I’m familiar with him, which is a crucial aspect for me.”
Clark joins a transforming Steelers secondary that recently traded perennial Pro Bowl safety Minkah Fitzpatrick for Jalen Ramsey, a former All-Pro cornerback. The first few days of camp revealed Ramsey taking over Fitzpatrick’s old position as the starting free safety while Juan Thornhill, another veteran defensive back, lined up in free safety during nickel package scenarios.
When asked about Clark’s potential contributions, Tomlin mentioned that it is yet to be determined, indicating that his performance during training camp will play a crucial role in defining his place on the team.
