Fantasy Impact: Update on Justin Jefferson's Hamstring and CeeDee Lamb's Rising Potential

Updates on Justin Jefferson's injury and insights on why CeeDee Lamb could be a strong contender for the top wide receiver spot.

Minnesota head coach Kevin O’Connell stated on Friday that wide receiver Justin Jefferson is handling a mild hamstring strain and will sit out practice. Jefferson will undergo reevaluation next week but is expected to play in Week 1. This is reassuring news for both the Vikings and fantasy players.

Jefferson currently ranks as the No. 2 wide receiver based on FantasyPros ADP, following Ja’Marr Chase and preceding CeeDee Lamb. However, many are questioning if this ranking is correct.

On our Fantasy Football Today podcast from Friday, we delved into discussions about the leading three wide receivers this season. Dan Schneier expressed a compelling opinion on his rankings for the wide receivers.

“I’m actually toying with the idea of putting Lamb as my WR1 over Chase,” Dan stated. “I’m debating it.”

Dan highlighted the benefits of adding George Pickens, indicating it could lighten coverage for Chase. Adam Aizer countered this argument, expressing his belief that it would improve Dak Prescott’s performance without elevating CeeDee Lamb’s potential.

“I believe it will enhance Dak Prescott, but it won’t improve CeeDee Lamb,” Adam remarked.

Adam presented instances of previous receiver acquisitions negatively influencing their teammates, including Davante Adams and Garrett Wilson last season. Meanwhile, Dave Richard countered that Chase remains exceptional with Tee Higgins, just as Jefferson does with Jordan Addison.

The discussion about Chase, Jefferson, and Lamb was particularly engaging around the 50-minute mark of the podcast, and I highly recommend checking it out. Personally, I’d rank them as Chase, Lamb, and Jefferson, all of whom are top-five overall choices in PPR leagues.

Here’s my analysis on all three in my Wide Receiver Tiers

On Chase… Chase should be the consensus No. 1 pick and is anticipated to replicate his stellar performances from 2024, when he led the league with 127 receptions and 1,708 yards, ending with 17 touchdowns. This achievement puts him among legends like Jerry Rice and Calvin Johnson. Chase averaged 23.7 PPR points each game, and with Joe Burrow’s presence, he is poised for another elite season.

On Lamb… With Prescott healthy, the last time both played together throughout an entire season in 2023, Lamb was the top fantasy receiver, averaging 23.7 PPR points. He’s likely to return to that form, positioning him possibly as high as the No. 3 overall pick, just behind Chase and Bijan Robinson. While the influence of Pickens remains to be seen, I have confidence in Lamb, who averaged 17.6 PPR points last season amid a shoulder injury and Prescott missing nine games.

On Jefferson… In 2024, Jefferson had another tremendous year, with 103 catches for 1,533 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging 18.7 PPR points. Concerns arose last year when Sam Darnold became the quarterback, but Jefferson demonstrated his unwavering status as a top choice in O’Connell’s scheme. Remarkably, he holds the record for the highest average yards per game at 96.5.

Chase remains my top pick unless an injury occurs, and I predict another phenomenal season for him. The only scenario that would lower Jefferson’s ranking would be if his hamstring ailment persists; however, I have no such worries.

On a closing note, CeeDee Lamb provided arguably the best quote of training camp pertaining to his upcoming season expectations:

“I feel like the league knows what happens when I’m healthy and I have Dak for a whole season. But if you don’t, I will happily show you what it’s going to be like this year. Honestly, I’m a dominant receiver. I don’t like to speak highly of myself, but I can’t wait to show you guys.”

Dan might be correct that Lamb has a case for being viewed as the top receiver. This debate regarding the hierarchy of Chase, Lamb, and Jefferson is shaping up to be an interesting one this season.
