Malachi Nelson Aims for a Comeback at UTEP Amidst Quarterback Competition

Malachi Nelson, a former five-star quarterback, seeks to rejuvenate his career at UTEP as he enters a competitive battle for the starting position.

When UTEP opens camp in August, all focus will be on the quarterback competition. Coach Scotty Walden plans to finalize the QB situation early this fall. Despite a 3-9 record last season, UTEP lost four games by a mere 24 points, highlighting the need for consistent quarterback performance.

Among the potential starters is Malachi Nelson, a former five-star recruit transferring from Boise State. Originally signed with USC out of Los Alamitos High School, Nelson’s journey has had its ups and downs due to injuries and competition. After struggling at USC and Boise State, he hopes to find success with the Miners.

Nelson is now in a fierce competition with returning players Cade McConnell and Skyler Locklear, and redshirt freshman Shay Smith.

“People say three, but it’s nearly four,” Walden remarked about the QB situation. “We have Cade coming off an injury, Skyler and Shay, plus Malachi. There’s real competition here.”

Walden aims to name a starter early in the fall camp, shifting from last year’s late decisions. He emphasized the importance of providing the chosen QB time to adjust.

“I probably waited too long last year,” he acknowledged. “This time, I want to allow the starter some time to settle in.”

Nelson possesses a unique talent, touted as UTEP’s most decorated recruit. Walden describes him as “as talented as anyone I’ve ever coached,” praising his arm strength and growing understanding of the game. Despite future expectations at USC and Boise State, neither stint went as planned. UTEP hopes to be a fresh start, providing an opportunity for Nelson to regain confidence.

There have been whispers regarding Nelson’s prior commitment and attitude, but Walden reports a positive change in El Paso. He has received affirmations from various coaches Nelson worked with during recruitment, confirming his readiness to handle hard training regimens.

“He shows a strong sense of humility and dedication,” said Walden. “He’s fit in well and impressed me with his hard work.”

As Nelson prepares for what could be a pivotal moment in his career, UTEP is optimistic about rekindling the quarterback’s potential, aiming for victories this season. If all goes well, he could finally secure a starting role and rejuvenate his college football trajectory.
