Breanna Stewart Reportedly Avoids Serious Leg Injury, Misses Game Against Wings

Breanna Stewart of the New York Liberty avoided a significant leg injury but did not participate in the game against the Dallas Wings following her recent setback.

Star forward of the New York Liberty Breanna Stewart underwent imaging tests revealing no severe injury to her right leg, as reported by the New York Post. Although Stewart is part of the Liberty’s ongoing four-game road trip, she was unable to play against the Dallas Wings on Monday. The exact date of her return remains unclear.

Stewart suffered an injury shortly into the Liberty’s recent loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday, leading to her exit in the second half. Despite overcoming a 15-point deficit, the Liberty ultimately lost the game 101-99, thanks to a buzzer-beater made by Rickea Jackson.

During her time on the court, Stewart set a screen for Sabrina Ionescu before attempting a contested layup. Although she initially appeared fine while hustling back on defense, she indicated that something was wrong right after crossing half court.

Stewart’s precise injury status is still uncertain, but the Liberty will likely exercise caution with the two-time MVP. Having had surgery on her right meniscus during the offseason and dealt with major injuries to both Achilles tendons in the past, her health remains a top priority.

Recently, she participated in her seventh All-Star Game and was on track for another All-WNBA season, averaging 19 points per game—ranking fifth in the league—along with 6.8 rebounds, 4 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game.

The reigning champion Liberty, currently in second place with a 17-7 record, are facing a tidal wave of injuries and player absences, with Jonquel Jones similarly troubled by injuries limiting her to just 11 games. Role player Leonie Fiebich has also struggled this season, missing a month for commitments with the German national team. Likewise, Nyara Sabally has been hindered by knee issues, impacting team depth.

Despite the obstacles, the Liberty remain title favorites due in part to the anticipated arrival of 2019 Finals MVP Emma Meesseman, who will join the lineup once her visa issues are resolved. While filling Stewart’s absence will be challenging, Meesseman’s return could mitigate the impact of such an absence.
