Veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton and the Denver Broncos have come to terms on a lucrative four-year extension valued at $92 million, as reported by multiple sources. Sutton was cautious during this week’s training camp, limiting his participation while awaiting the conclusion of contract negotiations. Coach Sean Payton remarked on Monday that discussions were moving in the right direction, indicating that an agreement was imminent.
“He’s gotten limited reps, and I think we’re close,” Payton said. “I’m not going to speak ahead of it, but we’re real close on a contract. I think our goal, when he and I met George Paton all along was this coming Monday. So I think there’ll be something fairly soon there.”
Sutton, now 29, was in line to finish the final year of his previous four-year, $60.8 million contract from November 2021, which included a cap hit of $20.2 million for the 2025 season per Spotrac. The new deal will see him earn approximately $23 million annually until the 2029 season.
Last year, Sutton reached a career-high 81 receptions for 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns—the second-best totals of his career. This was his first 1,000-yard season since 2019, which also marked his lone Pro Bowl appearance in his second NFL season.
In the prior offseason, Sutton opted out of voluntary practices as he sought an updated contract that ultimately did not materialize. The Broncos later granted him $1.5 million in performance-based incentives, all of which he achieved. He caught 40 more passes than the Broncos’ next leading receiver, Devaughn Vele, who managed just 41 receptions.
The contract extension fortifies Sutton’s role as a leading target for quarterback Bo Nix on an offense that was ranked 10th in scoring in the NFL last season, averaging 25 points per game—the Broncos’ highest finish since the Peyton Manning era.
The Denver Broncos made it to the playoffs last season, their first appearance in nine years, having last won Super Bowl 50 at the end of the 2015 season. Sutton has been a reliable component in the Broncos’ offensive lineup since they selected him in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft from SMU. He has led the team in receiving yards for four of the past seven seasons while adapting to various quarterbacks—a situation that may stabilize with Nix’s promising rookie year in 2024.
Heading into his eighth season in the NFL, Sutton’s career stats stand at 379 receptions, 5,340 yards, and 32 touchdowns.
