Lakers' JJ Redick Shares Key Insights for Bronny James's NBA Growth

Coach JJ Redick outlines the essential steps Bronny James needs to take in order to enhance his game and secure a lasting role in the NBA.

Bronny James is embarking on his second year in the NBA, aiming to secure a regular spot on the Lakers roster. After participating in only 27 games and logging a total of 181 minutes mainly in the G League, his path to achieving this goal presents significant challenges, although Lakers coach JJ Redick believes in his potential to succeed.

“The biggest thing for Bronny is that he has to get in elite shape,” Redick mentioned through ESPN. “That’s the barrier of entry for him right now. And if he does that, I think he’s got a chance to be a really fantastic player in the NBA.”

Redick expressed that it’s important for Bronny to hone his skills to emulate players like TJ McConnell and Davion Mitchell, who significantly influence games through their defensive tenacity and effort.

“With the defensive pickup points, the disruption, being able to get downhill … I think we have all seen these amazing flashes of it from Bronny. To reach that next level, it’s about cardio fitness.”

JJ Redick drew parallels between McConnell and Mitchell’s playing styles to illustrate Bronny’s potential growth trajectory. McConnell notably made his mark during the Pacers’ unexpected push to the NBA Finals, while Mitchell has developed a reputation for his defensive prowess, particularly against larger guards.

Transitioning onto the hardwood, James faces physical hurdles due to his health history, including a cardiac incident he experienced in July 2023 which necessitated surgery.

“I get kind of sick easier now,” Bronny shared. “Which is kind of weird, but I think it messed with my immune system a little bit. So, I would have times where I have to sit out, which affects my conditioning.”

However, Bronny remains determined, receiving encouragement from his coach and teammates.

“He’s cleared,” Redick stated. “… I get that there’s a history of a really scary experience he had to overcome, and it’s tough for him to push past certain points, but he’s going to get there. He will get there.”
