Kenny Pickett Returns to Limited Practice as He Fights for Starting QB Role

Cleveland Browns quarterback Kenny Pickett makes his return to practice in a limited capacity while contending for the starting position against veteran Joe Flacco.

After spending three days recuperating from a hamstring issue, Cleveland Browns quarterback Kenny Pickett resumed practice on Friday, albeit in a limited capacity, according to coach Kevin Stefanski. Pickett will not engage in team drills as he competes with veteran Joe Flacco for the starting position.

“Obviously disappointed that he’s not full go, but he’s very much involved in everything we’re doing,” Stefanski said. “He’s a player that has had a good amount of NFL game exposure. He’s had a lot of reps going back through the spring and what we’ve gotten accomplished so far through training camp. You don’t want anybody to be missing action due to any injury, but he has done a nice job of staying very much engaged.”

Before his injury, Stefanski noted that he appreciated what he saw from Pickett during the initial phase of training camp practices, highlighting that Pickett spent significant time with the Browns’ first-team offense.

“I thought Kenny had a strong block there,” Stefanski mentioned. “He did use his mobility a couple of times there and is a fast player. He can really run … But I thought he had a good four days.”

While not fully recovered yet, Pickett’s return is timely for both him and the team, as the Browns have two more practices planned in Cleveland before they travel to Charlotte for a joint practice with the Panthers. They are set to play the Panthers in their first preseason game on August 8.

At 26 years old, Pickett recently received his Super Bowl ring after being part of the 2024 Eagles championship team. He won his only start with the Eagles last season.

Drafted in the first round of 2022, Pickett has a record of 7-5 as the Steelers starting quarterback during the 2022 and ‘23 seasons. He was traded from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia last offseason after the Steelers opted for a different direction at quarterback.

In Cleveland, Pickett is part of a quarterback room that also includes Flacco and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.
