Former NFL Players Deserving of Number Retirements

An exploration of former NFL players whose jersey numbers should be retired by their respective teams.

Retiring a jersey number is one of the highest honors in professional sports, second only to being immortalized with a statue. Recently, Art Monk, a former Hall of Fame receiver for the Washington Commanders, was honored this way, marking a significant milestone as he becomes the sixth player in the franchise to have his number taken out of circulation.

Despite this recognition, many noteworthy former players have yet to receive the same honor. While most NFL teams have retired specific numbers, six teams—Dallas Cowboys, Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens, and New Orleans Saints—have not, despite having players deserving of this respect.

Here’s a short list highlighting a former standout from each NFL team that ought to have their number retired.

Arizona Cardinals: WR Larry Fitzgerald — No. 11

Anticipated to receive this honor once eligible for the Hall of Fame.

Atlanta Falcons: QB Matt Ryan — No. 2

The only league MVP in franchise history who helped lead the Falcons close to their first Super Bowl victory.

Baltimore Ravens: LB Ray Lewis — No. 52

A two-time Defensive Player of the Year and a pivotal figure in two Super Bowl victories for the Ravens.

Buffalo Bills: WR Andre Reed — No. 83

A central figure during the Bills’ four consecutive AFC title runs, Reed should join Hall of Fame teammates in having his number retired.

Carolina Panthers: QB Cam Newton — No. 1

Newton is recognized not only for his MVP season but also for guiding the Panthers to various successes.

Chicago Bears: LB Brian Urlacher — No. 54

One of the two Defensive Player of the Year recipients in Bears history who led the team to a Super Bowl appearance.

…and many more for each team, highlighting the rich history and talent across the league.
