Celtics Owner Plans to Purchase and Move Connecticut Sun to Boston
The Boston Celtics' minority owner, Steve Pagliuca, has reached an agreement to buy the WNBA's Connecticut Sun, with plans to relocate the team to Boston pending league approval.
Relocation may be on the horizon for the WNBA. Pending league approval, the Connecticut Sun is set to move to Boston by 2027, according to the Boston Globe. The move is part of an acquisition by Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca, who has agreed to acquire the Sun for a record $325 million, the highest price for a women’s sports franchise in U.S. history.
Pagliuca plans to invest an additional $100 million in a new practice facility in Boston. The Sun would host its home games at TD Garden, a venue they sold out during two games over the past two seasons. The Celtics have confirmed that they have no objection to the Sun becoming co-tenants at TD Garden, although the team might need to play early-season games in Rhode Island to avoid conflicts.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed her support, stating: “I’ve been pushing for years for Boston to get a WNBA team; I think it would be great for Boston… I think it makes a lot of sense.”
However, the sale is pending approval from the WNBA, which may prefer to keep the franchise in Connecticut while potentially targeting Boston for expansion instead. According to the WNBA, decisions about relocation are made by the Board of Governors rather than individual teams, indicating that the approval process could be complex.
If successful, this move will align Boston with a wave of new WNBA cities as the league expands.
