Luka Dončić's Major Contract Signals Fresh Beginning for Lakers

Luka Dončić's three-year extension with the Lakers marks a significant moment as he prepares for the upcoming NBA season after a summer of personal development.

Luka Dončić’s three-year max extension has made him incredibly wealthy. The reported $165 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers positions Dončić as the cornerstone of the franchise’s aim for an 18th NBA championship. However, this significant financial commitment also amplifies the expectations for Dončić, especially in light of prior critiques regarding his physical fitness.

This summer, Dončić committed to enhancing his fitness and reflected on his conditioning when discussing his contract extension on Saturday.

“It was like a fresh start for me,” he mentioned about his offseason regimen. “I was on my way to do it, but it was a fresh start. Had a little more time to get my mind off basketball, just doing other things. I would just say a fresh start for me.”

“For the first month, I didn’t play basketball at all. We were more focused on other things. I think that sparked it. The first five days without basketball were actually really hard. I didn’t know what to do. After, it was easier. Physically, weightlifting and balancing. After one month, we were playing basketball too.”

In addition to improving his speed on the court, Dončić believes that shedding weight will increase his resilience during the taxing 82-game NBA season. This extra stamina should also bolster Dončić’s defensive capabilities. Furthermore, he will benefit from the expertise of 2022 Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart, who signed with the Lakers during free agency.

“Obviously, we have Marcus, so he’s gonna teach me some things,” Dončić said. “That’s gonna help a lot.”

Six months ago, Dončić’s life changed dramatically following a surprising blockbuster trade that saw him leave the Dallas Mavericks for the Lakers. Although he participated in just 33 games with Los Angeles, Dončić has embraced the long-term vision set by general manager Rob Pelinka.

Embracing New Role Heading Into Season

Although LeBron James has long been synonymous with the Lakers, it is clear that this team is now Dončić’s to lead. He welcomes this transition as he aims to return to the NBA Finals, seeking the championship he missed in Dallas in 2024.

“It’s an honor, playing for this organization,” Dončić reflected. “Many, many great players played here. Obviously, I want to add one more [banner] up there. That’s what we’re working for.”

“Honestly, I think we have a great team. We have what we need to compete for a championship. I’ll bring what I already brought: Trying to win every game no matter what. We got some new great guys on the team, so you know we’re gonna go for it.”

Dončić feels that having a preparation period with his teammates—something he missed during his midseason trade—will be invaluable as he matures as a leader and assists the Lakers in developing a championship-level roster around him.

“With Rob, I talk more about the guys we wanna get,” he stated. “The players, I think that’s gonna develop in preseason when we’re all together and talking in person. I think that’s more happening in the preseason.”
