When Donald Trump signed the executive order creating his council for sports, fitness, and nutrition, he recognized notable athletes, including NFL players Saquon Barkley, Tua Tagovailoa, and Nick Bosa, alongside Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Tagovailoa expressed his puzzlement regarding how he got appointed but was grateful nonetheless.
“I think it’s pretty cool,” Tagovailoa said. “It’s an honor. I don’t know too much about it, but again I think that’s an honor.”
Upon inquiring about the nature of his appointment, Tagovailoa humorously remarked, “I should ask you that same question too, bro. How did that all develop? I’m not too sure.”
During an impression of Trump, he shared that the president mispronounced his last name yet still praised him as “fantastic” when in good health. Tagovailoa dismissed any potential offense regarding the mispronunciation, recalling worse instances from his college days in Alabama.
Tagovailoa represents the second NFL player to question the rationale behind his council membership, with Barkley openly declining the invitation and expressing surprise at the mention of his name. Barkley remarked, “A couple of months ago, it was brought to my team about the council. So I’m not really too familiar with it. I felt like I am going to be super busy, so me and my family thought it would probably be for the best not to accept that. I was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned.”
Trump’s initiative aims to address childhood obesity while supporting active lifestyles among youth. Former NFL players Lawrence Taylor and Tony Romo, along with Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, were also included in the council.
