Lakers Call Off Trade for Mark Williams Amid Physical Concerns
The Lakers have canceled their agreement to trade for Hornets center Mark Williams due to issues arising from his medical examination.
The Los Angeles Lakers have rescinded the trade to acquire Charlotte Hornets big man Mark Williams after he failed the team’s physical, per Shams Charania.
The trade was intended to bring a significant boost to the Lakers’ roster but was thwarted by what the team refers to as a “failure to satisfy a condition of the trade”. Initially, the Lakers had offered a package including Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, along with future draft picks to secure Williams.
In a statement regarding the cancellation, the Hornets expressed their excitement to welcome Williams back, emphasizing their appreciation for his talent and character. This situation is unusual as the team’s options were limited after the trade deadline passed. Ultimately, they have opted to withdraw from the deal, leaving them without an impactful big man for the season unless they can explore the buyout market.
Despite Williams being seen as a promising addition and a valuable asset to pair with Lakers superstar Luka Doncic, his injury concerns have raised significant doubts. Williams has had a rocky season, appearing in only 23 games so far due to a foot issue and additional back complications.
Looking forward, the Lakers will need to explore alternative options in the buyout market to fill the void left by Williams, with names like Mo Bamba and Kelly Olynyk potentially coming into consideration.
