Carson Williams Set for Major League Debut with the Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays are ready to promote Carson Williams, their highly regarded shortstop prospect, to the major leagues according to reports.

The Tampa Bay Rays are promoting shortstop prospect Carson Williams to the majors, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Although the team hasn’t officially announced the move or any corresponding changes, veteran shortstop Ha-Seong Kim is expected to go on the injured list after missing Wednesday’s game due to back issues.

At 22 years old, Williams is recognized for his defensive abilities and has played this season in Triple-A, where he has recorded a batting line of .213/.318/.447 along with 23 home runs and 22 stolen bases over 111 games. However, he struggles with consistency at the plate, having struck out over 34% of the time, along with a nearly 39% whiff rate on swings.

Recently, CBS Sports listed Williams as the No. 22 prospect in the minor leagues, stating:

“One of the challenges of prospect evaluation is assessing what is realistic versus unrealistic growth. Williams’s swing-and-miss issues have persisted throughout his career, and while it’s unrealistic to expect a complete fix, there’s reason to remain hopeful for improvement from a player who just turned 22. That’s why I keep ranking him despite a whiff rate that could be among the highest in the majors.”

Williams joins Bubba Chandler of the Pittsburgh Pirates and catcher Samuel Basallo of the Baltimore Orioles as top prospects stepping up recently. Their promotions come as the regular season nears its end, which allows them to retain rookie eligibility for next season.
