Gotham FC’s first match in NYC
Gotham FC launched their Concacaf W Champions Cup title defense with a match against Monterrey at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island. This event marked the return of top-flight soccer to Manhattan after a long hiatus. Icahn Stadium is significant not only for its accessibility but also for its history; it is located at the site where Pele made his New York Cosmos debut in 1975.
Averbuch West remarked, “I know there are people who are like, ‘Finally! There’s a game in New York,’ so it’s been nice to achieve that.” Despite the challenges posed by weather conditions, fans traversed the damp paths to enjoy this historic match.
Jen Muller, a representative of the Gotham supporters group, emphasized the venue’s adjustment challenge but appreciated the connection to their fan base, stating, “it’s nice for folks who live in New York to have a somewhat closer venue.”
In true New York style, the match delivered not just excitement on the field but also unique soundscapes, including the distant sirens and iconic tunes of local vendors. Shelby Hogan, the Gotham goalkeeper, commented, “These Concacaf games are always a little crazy. It’s fun. I just think it brings new challenges, playing teams from other countries.”
With a thrilling atmosphere and historical significance, Gotham FC’s first official game in New York promises to be a memorable occasion, celebrated amidst the chaos that typifies the city’s sporting culture.
