The NWSL celebrated a new attendance record on Saturday with a sellout crowd of 40,091 at MLB’s Oracle Park as Bay FC hosted the Washington Spirit. This marks the second time Bay FC has set an attendance record, following last year’s record of 35,038 at Wrigley Field in Chicago. In an exciting match, the visitors managed to win with a score of 3-2, featuring goals from Kate Wiesner and Croix Bethune.
“Breaking the NWSL attendance record is a historic moment that extends far beyond a single match. It represents the foundation we are building at Bay FC and the legacy we hope to leave for future generations of players and fans. By pushing boundaries today, we are shaping what women’s football will look like tomorrow. Special thanks to each and every Bay Area fan. You made this historic moment possible,” a Bay FC club statement read.
The new attendance record is the highest in NWSL history since its inception in 2013 and sets a new standard for any women’s professional sports league in the U.S.
The loss for Bay FC indicates a more challenging road ahead in their playoff chase, as they currently sit four points outside the playoff line. Meanwhile, the victory moves the Spirit to second place with 31 points, just ahead of San Diego Wave FC who are at 29 points, with a game against Racing Louisville scheduled on Sunday.
