The NWSL celebrated a significant milestone last Saturday when a sellout crowd of 40,091 attended the match at MLB’s Oracle Park where Bay FC faced off against the Washington Spirit. This marked the second attendance record for Bay FC, following the previous record set last year at Wrigley Field in Chicago with 35,038 spectators. Despite this historic turnout, Bay FC fell short, losing the match 3-2, with goals from Kate Wiesner and Croix Bethune.
“Breaking the NWSL attendance record is a historic moment that extends beyond just one game. It reflects the foundation we are establishing at Bay FC and the legacy we aim to create for future generations of players and supporters. By pushing limits today, we envision what women’s football will look like tomorrow. A special thank you to all the Bay Area fans; you made this historic moment possible,” said a statement from Bay FC.
This event is now the highest attendance recorded for any NWSL match since the league’s inception in 2013 and sets a new standard for women’s professional sports leagues in the United States.
The loss positioned Bay FC four points away from playoff contention as they approach week 17, while the victory allowed the Spirit to secure second place with 31 points.
