Islam Makhachev suggests that the American sports culture may contribute to the difficulties faced by U.S. fighters in winning UFC titles. He notes that while champions like Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell significantly impacted the UFC’s early growth, currently only one of the 11 titleholders hails from the United States.
Makhachev, who aims to secure a second title in a different weight division, attributes the struggles of American fighters to their approach and the weight of cultural expectations from their communities. According to him, “Our guys live for this sport,” implying that fighters from his region bear a sense of responsibility to their families and communities that fuels their determination.
He remarks on the changing landscape, stating, “If they keep signing more of our guys, I’m sure there will be more champions from the Caucasus, Dagestan, and Chechnya.” Makhachev highlights the importance of effective self-promotion, urging fighters to learn English and market their contests to attract North American fans. He believes that this is vital for sustaining interest in their fights and ensuring successful events.
