Michael Vick's Coaching Debut Results in Disappointing Loss for Norfolk State
In his first game as head coach, Michael Vick's Norfolk State faced a disappointing defeat against Towson, struggling with penalties and offensive execution.
Michael Vick’s offensive prowess as a player hasn’t yet translated into coaching success. On Thursday, the former NFL star led his first game as head coach of Norfolk State University in Virginia, where his team faced a bitter defeat at home against Towson, ending with a score of 27-7.
The Spartans did not manage to score until the fourth quarter, amassing only 39 rushing yards from 31 attempts. Despite having no turnovers, they racked up nine penalties totaling 78 yards, thwarting multiple drives. Vick’s team converted only three of thirteen third downs.
Once celebrated as one of the most dynamic players in football history during his tenure at Virginia Tech and the NFL, Vick entered this coaching role with limited experience. Previously, he was appointed as the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Legends in the Alliance of American Football in 2019, but stepped down before his debut due to other commitments. Subsequently, he briefly served as a consultant for the organization for one season.
This hire reflects a growing trend in college football, where programs are bringing in coaches without prior collegiate experience. For instance, North Carolina recently shocked the college football scene by hiring Bill Belichick, touted as one of the best NFL coaches in history, to replace Mack Brown, even though he has never coached at the collegiate level.
Norfolk State, which plays in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, finished the previous season with a record of 4-8. They are set to play Virginia State next on Saturday, September 6.
