Assessing Height Concerns for LSU's Nussmeier and Clemson's Klubnik in the NFL Draft

A look at the potential impact of height on the NFL prospects Garrett Nussmeier and Cade Klubnik ahead of the 2026 Draft.

When discussing top NFL quarterback prospects, especially those eligible for the draft, height becomes a critical factor. Garrett Nussmeier of LSU is officially measured at 6-foot-5/8, while Clemson’s Cade Klubnik stands at 6-foot-1 1/2. In a recent matchup, Nussmeier showcased his talent, reminding spectators of his early-season form from 2024, whereas Klubnik struggled against the LSU squad, which ultimately lost 17-10.

The initial discussions often revolve around the quarterbacks’ heights. Historically, height is a significant criterion during evaluations for the quarterback position.

In my recent Top 50 Big Board, Nussmeier ranked No. 11, positioned as my second-best quarterback, while Klubnik ranked at No. 52, placed fifth in the line-up. Among the notable names, only Nussmeier and Klubnik fall under the 6-foot-2 threshold. Since 2010, only seven out of fifty quarterbacks selected in the first round have measured shorter than this benchmark:

  • Bryce Young and Kyler Murray: 5-foot-10 1/8
  • Johnny Manziel: 5-foot-11 3/4
  • Tua Tagovailoa: 6-foot-0
  • Baker Mayfield: 6-foot-0 5/8
  • Caleb Williams: 6-foot-1
  • Cam Ward: 6-foot-1 5/8

This shorter group has had mixed experiences in their careers; for instance, Young was benched early into his career but later regained his starting role and showed potential to lead his team effectively. Other quarterbacks like Murray and Mayfield have also experienced ups and downs in their performances.

Nussmeier is commended for his IQ on the field and for making his reads. However, his lack of outstanding athletic traits means he must execute flawlessly. Klubnik has demonstrated related skills, improving throughout the 2024 season, but needs further growth in certain areas, like anticipatory throws.

Interviews with league evaluators suggest a divide in opinions regarding their prospects. Some are hesitant about Nussmeier’s height, while others remain unfazed, leaning towards the quarterback’s ability to read defenses and make precise throws.

In terms of numbers, a notable amount of recent quarterbacks drafted have not only surpassed the height criteria but also demonstrated significant skills in high-pressure games, indicating that it’s competencies that should mainly drive decisions at the NFL level, rather than mere measurements alone.
