Sparks Stun Storm, Staying Alive in the WNBA Playoff Race

In a thrilling finish in Seattle, the Sparks overcame a 17-point deficit to close the playoff gap as the regular season nears its end.

As the 2025 WNBA regular season reaches its climax, the playoff picture is becoming more defined. With only a couple of weeks left, four of the eight playoff berths are filled, although just one position has been firmly secured. The Los Angeles Sparks added intrigue to the race on Monday by staging a remarkable comeback.

When the Seattle Storm built a 17-point advantage, it appeared that the Sparks’ postseason aspirations were in jeopardy. However, Dearica Hamby and Rickea Jackson spearheaded a stunning second-half rally, narrowing the deficit to just 1½ games behind the Storm, now positioned eighth in the standings, with the Sparks owning the tiebreaker.

Additionally, on the same day, the Atlanta Dream bested the Connecticut Sun, closing in on the Las Vegas Aces for the second spot.

The playoff chase intensifies on Tuesday with two crucial matchups:

  • New York Liberty at Golden State Valkyries, 10 p.m. ET – League Pass
  • Indiana Fever at Phoenix Mercury, 10 p.m. ET – NBA TV

All eight teams will make the playoffs, regardless of conference, competing in a standard bracket format. The first round features a best-of-three series, followed by best-of-five semifinals and a best-of-seven Finals.

The regular season concludes on September 11, leading into the playoffs starting September 14, with the latest possible Finals date being October 19.
