The inaugural game of the third year under Coach Deion Sanders for the Colorado Buffaloes concluded with a controversial decision. During their final drive in a 27-20 loss to Georgia Tech, Sanders opted not to use his remaining two timeouts. The decision became a focal point after Haynes King of Georgia Tech scored a 45-yard rushing touchdown with just over a minute left, putting his team ahead.
Colorado regained possession with two timeouts but managed only 25 yards in six plays. A Hail Mary attempt by quarterback Kaidon Salter failed to convert. Post-game, Sanders explained his rationale for not calling the timeouts, stating it ‘didn’t make sense’ given the situation’s dynamics.
On a subsequent public address, Sanders reiterated, ‘Let’s just get the cat out of the bag, the final drive execution did not warrant a timeout.’ He questioned the effectiveness of stopping the clock after a loss of yards and maintained that quick plays were necessary.
Looking ahead, Colorado will face Delaware this Saturday, and might see the debut of freshman quarterback Julian Lewis, who is part of a celebrated 2025 recruiting class.
