Deontay Wilder and Francis Ngannou have been eyeing a potential fight for years. Recently, Wilder has expressed a keen interest in turning that prospect into a reality.
The possibility of a fight between Wilder and Ngannou has been on the table since Ngannou transitioned from the UFC in 2020, seeking significant boxing opportunities. On Wednesday, Wilder confirmed his heightened interest in facing Ngannou after conversation resumed.
“There have been talks previously, back and forth, but right now it’s warming up,” Wilder stated during an interview on The Ariel Helwani Show. “Things are warming up. He’s acknowledged what he wants to do. He’s sent out the message and I’ve replied. I’ve acknowledged that I’m serious, willing, ready and able to do what it takes to get this fight."
The excitement surrounding this potential bout has diminished somewhat in recent years due to both fighters facing challenges in the ring. Wilder has suffered four knockout losses in his last six matches, while Ngannou’s recent defeat against Anthony Joshua stalled the momentum he gained from his boxing debut, nearly defeating Tyson Fury.
Wilder noted that while he views the fight primarily as a spectacle, it could prove vital for both fighters in their careers’ rehabilitation.
“I think it’ll be more entertainment for fans than the business side of boxing. But every fight counts, and it gets you closer to your goals,” Wilder elaborated. “Francis has heart. He’s an MMA heavyweight champion, which adds significant weight to this matchup. We’re two strong guys looking to test our power against each other. So let the games begin. I’m all in, baby. That sounds like a good time, so don’t threaten me with a good time.”
Wilder remains open to other opportunities despite his enthusiasm for a fight with Ngannou.
“I wouldn’t say he’s the frontrunner because of other things we have going on. He’s not the only one.”
The discussions surrounding this matchup reflect a growing interest that could lead to a thrilling event for boxing fans.
