Amanda Anisimova Defeats Naomi Osaka to Advance to US Open Final

Amanda Anisimova triumphed over Naomi Osaka in a thrilling match to secure her place in the US Open final.

Entering the summer, Amanda Anisimova had never reached a Grand Slam final. Now, she is on her way to her second within three months. The 24-year-old American has made it to the US Open women’s singles final after defeating No. 23 Naomi Osaka with a score of 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 6-3.

Anisimova will face No. 1 seed Aryna Sabalenka in the final on Saturday.

“This has been a dream of mine, like, forever is to be in the US Open final,” Anisimova stated during her on-court interview with ESPN. “Obviously the hope is to be the champion, but I’m in the final now, and I’m gonna try to get ready, but I’m just excited. It’s really special.”

Translation: This has been my dream for a long time, to participate in the US Open final. I hope to become the champion, but I’m thrilled just to be in the final.

In the match, Osaka initially broke Anisimova in the first game but faced challenges herself. After briefly losing the lead with unforced errors, Anisimova managed to claw her way back into contention, breaking Osaka’s serve back to level the game as they went point-for-point.

After a swing in momentum that saw critical moments in tiebreaks, Anisimova regained her strength and focus, capturing the second set to force a decisive third. In the final set, she exhibited power and precision, delivering strong serves that secured her victory.

Having lost to Iga Swiatek in the Wimbledon final just two months prior, Anisimova aims to improve in this upcoming title match.

“Naomi is playing amazing tennis,” Anisimova said about her opponent. “She’s back where she belongs. I’ve told her I’m proud of her after having a baby and playing at this level. It’s insane.”

Translation: Naomi is playing exceptionally well and is back to where she should be. I expressed my pride to her for competing at this level post-baby.

Anisimova holds a 6-3 record against Sabalenka with a crucial victory over her during their recent Wimbledon match.
