The Philadelphia Eagles started their 2025 season against their rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, on Thursday night, before a single play was even executed. Star defensive tackle Jalen Carter was given the boot right after the opening kickoff for allegedly spitting on quarterback Dak Prescott’s uniform.
A pause in the game was enforced due to an injury during the kickoff. When both teams went on the field, a verbal exchange occurred between Carter and Prescott, culminating with Carter apparently spitting on Prescott. This action led to unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and his ejection from the match. The Eagles also received a 15-yard penalty for his conduct.
Referee Shawn Smith confirmed that one of the officials had seen Carter’s actions, labeling them as a ‘disqualifiable foul’ and a ’non-football act.’
“There is no excusing or rationalizing this. You absolutely do not do this. Jalen Carter will be subject to a hefty fine by the league next week.” — Jonathan Jones (@jjones9)
During a third-quarter lightning delay, a broadcast revealed added context, showing Prescott inching closer to Carter and spitting in his direction, albeit at the ground, which escalated to Carter’s response of spitting directly at Prescott.
“Dak fired the first spittle?? We had a retaliatory spit?”

According to CBS Sports research, Carter’s dismissal marks the fastest ejection in an NFL game since September 12, 2005. The 24-year-old Carter, taken as the 9th overall pick in 2023, is known as an emerging star playing on the Eagles’ formidable defense. He recorded 42 combined tackles and 4.5 sacks last season and is a key loss for Vic Fangio’s team.
In response to the ejection, Prescott effectively led a six-play drive resulting in a touchdown from Javonte Williams, giving the Cowboys the early lead.
