Falcons Considering Kicker Alternatives After Younghoe Koo's Missed Field Goal Leads to Loss Against Buccaneers

Atlanta Falcons are evaluating their options at kicker following Younghoe Koo's late-game miss that cost them a chance to tie.

The Falcons are considering their options for a kicker after Younghoe Koo missed a crucial field goal in the last seconds, resulting in a 23-20 defeat to the Buccaneers. Coach Raheem Morris mentioned on Monday that the team will conduct a workout on Tuesday, which will include both veteran kickers and promising newcomers. Lenny Krieg, a practice squad kicker, is also viewed as a potential candidate.

“There are no secrets regarding how we operate here,” Morris stated. “We will maintain a highly competitive environment. We have a young prospect in-house but will evaluate options both externally and internally.”

Currently, Koo remains the starting kicker as Atlanta readies for their upcoming game against the Vikings. The seasoned kicker, now in his eighth NFL season and seventh with the Falcons, expressed his determination to bounce back:

“It’s tough, obviously; I need to get back to work. I had a great offseason and felt good leading into Week 1. There’s only so much I can adjust during a game; I’ll learn from this experience and keep moving forward.”

Historically, Koo has shown resilience; after being waived by the Chargers early in his career, he rebounded in a subsequent season, achieving an impressive 94.9% success rate on field goals in 2020.

Koo has been a reliable kicker for Atlanta but faced a performance decline last year, hitting only 73.5% of his kicks. In the recent loss to Tampa Bay, he successfully converted two of three field goals and both of his PATs.
