Ekeler Likely Suffers Torn Achilles During Game Against Packers

Austin Ekeler might have a torn Achilles, and he'll undergo an MRI to confirm the injury.

The Washington Commanders suspect that Austin Ekeler has suffered a torn Achilles during the latter part of the Thursday night game, where they faced the Green Bay Packers, losing 27-18, according to ESPN. Ekeler is set to have further imaging on Friday to confirm the injury.

He was carted off in the fourth quarter after a non-contact injury occurred while he was running a route. Following the incident, he required assistance to exit the field before being taken into the locker room. It wasn’t long before the Commanders officially ruled him out for the rest of the game.

Ekeler, 30, is concluding the final year of a two-year contract signed in March 2024. Known for his versatility, Ekeler has had several productive seasons with the Chargers before he transitioned to Washington after the 2023 season. Last year, he tallied 733 all-purpose yards, contributing significantly to Washington’s progression to the NFC title game for the first time since 1991, and earned a Second-Team All-Pro recognition for his achievements as a kickoff returner.

In the game against the Packers, Ekeler was one of only three players running the ball for the Commanders. Leading the team, he carried the ball eight times, while Jayden Daniels had seven carries totaling only 17 yards, and rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt managed 17 yards across four attempts.

The running back options for the Commanders also include Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez Jr., the latter of whom was inactive during the team’s initial two games. Unfortunately, McNichols did not have any carries or targets in this match.
