Purdue Pays Tribute to Gary Danielson During Halftime Against USC

The former Purdue quarterback and CBS Sports analyst received recognition at Ross-Ade Stadium as he nears retirement after decades in football.

Ross-Ade Stadium took a moment to honor Gary Danielson, the former Purdue quarterback and veteran broadcaster, during halftime of the Big Ten game against USC. This recognition comes as Danielson edges closer to retirement after 50 years in football.

Danielson, aged 74, announced earlier this year that he will step down after the 2025 college football season, eliciting a warm response from the Purdue supporters. Known as part of “the Cradle of Quarterbacks,” he was a standout player in 1971, leading the Big Ten in passing yards with 1,467.

After spending ten years in the NFL, Danielson transitioned into broadcasting, joining CBS Sports as the lead college football analyst in 2006, a position he holds to this day with a remarkable tenure of 20 years on air. He expressed gratitude for returning to Purdue, where his journey began, as he concludes his illustrious career.

“It’s a special moment to be back where it all started,” said Danielson during the ceremony.

His successor has already been announced: veteran broadcaster Charles Davis will take over the role starting in 2026.
