U.S. women’s national team talent and Racing Louisville star Savannah DeMelo collapsed on the field on Sunday night during an NWSL match. The California native was seen taking a seat on the pitch while showing signs of distress before her body collapsed backward. Her club has reported she is stable and alert as of 9:37 p.m. ET, having been transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.
At the time of the incident, she was with two teammates and a member of the medical staff, who quickly signaled for an ambulance onto the pitch. Teammates were visibly emotional as they walked off and looked back at the unfolding situation.

This was the second medical episode for DeMelo this season, as she suffered a collapse during a match against Bay FC on March 22, citing dizziness and shortness of breath at that time. She was taken off the field by stretcher.
While the cause of this recent incident remains unclear, DeMelo, 27, was diagnosed with Graves’ disease and hyperthyroidism last fall. She remarked to ESPN, “Playing a 90-minute game felt unbearable. I would get to maybe the 25th minute and I felt my heart was just beating out of my chest. I felt so out of breath, so out of shape.”
The remainder of the match will be rescheduled at a later date, according to Racing Louisville.
