U.S. women’s national team talent and Louisville City star Savannah DeMelo collapsed on the field on Sunday night while playing in an NWSL match. The California native could be seen taking a seat on the pitch while under distress before the top half of her body collapsed backwards. Her club said she was stable and alert at 9:37 p.m. ET, adding that she was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.
During the incident, she was attended to by two teammates and a member of the medical staff, who quickly called for an ambulance. Her teammates were visibly shaken as they left the field, frequently glancing back at the situation that was unfolding.
“Sav DeMelo’s medical emergency 💜 Game officially suspended. #nwsl Praying for her, the fans, and team 🙏🏽” — Girly Soccer Talk (@girlysoccertalk) [September 15, 2025].
This incident marked her second medical event of the season. Back on March 22, during a match against Bay FC, she fainted on the pitch after feeling dizzy and short of breath, which necessitated her having to be removed on a stretcher.
While her specific diagnosis from this latest episode remains unknown, at the age of 27, DeMelo was diagnosed with Graves’ disease and hyperthyroidism last fall, according to ESPN. She mentioned, “Playing a 90-minute game felt unbearable. I would get to maybe the 25th minute, and I felt like my heart was just beating so fast, like out of my chest. I felt out of breath and out of shape. I didn’t know what was going on.”
The remaining minutes of the match will be rescheduled at a later date, as announced by Racing Louisville.
