NWSL Power Rankings: Gotham FC Elevates While Kansas City Current Stays Dominant

A snapshot of NWSL standings as the league enters the final weeks of the regular season.

The stakes are rising for the 2025 NWSL regular season as it approaches its climax. Week 20 showcased an intriguing playoff preview between the Kansas City Current and the Washington Spirit, where the two top teams ended in a scoreless tie. The Spirit aim to widen their point tally when they face Angel City FC on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. ET on Paramount+. Meanwhile, Angel City is under pressure as they sit three points short of the playoff line.

Kansas City Current is the only team guaranteed a postseason spot, while 13 other clubs are still in contention. The NWSL Power Rankings reflect these shifting dynamics—playoff hopefuls are on the rise while others face growing challenges. For team performance trends, refer to my previous rankings.

2025 NWSL Power Rankings

Here’s how the league stacks up as week 21 approaches:

1. Kansas City Current (–)

Dare I say Kansas City Current looked vulnerable without Temwa Chawinga? Yes, they did. They also appeared agitated and eager to demonstrate why they are the team to beat this season. If the plan is to rest Chawinga’s knee until closer to playoffs, it’s wise, but the squad must learn to score without her.

2. Washington Spirit (–)

Despite the NWSL Shield potentially being out of reach, the Washington Spirit aren’t holding back on performance. Midfielder Leicy Santos displayed impressive defensive skills and creativity, and Tara McKeown is making a solid case for NWSL Defender of the Year.

3. Portland Thorns FC (–)

This squad is matching up well against competitors who are performing at their peak. While Portland has missed several recent scoring opportunities, it hasn’t impacted their position in the rankings.

4. Seattle Reign FC (+1)

Seattle executed their strategy perfectly, though they still face concerns about scoring. Veteran midfielder Jess Fishlock remains a reliable option in emergencies.

5. Gotham FC (+2)

Gotham FC is gaining momentum at an essential time, and Esther Gonzalez is currently leading the Golden Boot race while midfielder Jaelin Howell contributes significantly when not disrupting opponents.

6. Orlando Pride (-2)

New signing Jacqueline Ovalle contributed her first NWSL assist just in time, considering Orlando is quickly falling behind as the season winds down.

7. San Diego Wave (+2)

San Diego is in a tense battle with Orlando, repeatedly stalling this season. The team’s scoring is a concern, leaving us questioning the side that shone earlier in the season.

8. Racing Louisville (–)

Racing Louisville is feeling the heat from stronger teams. Positive thoughts are sent to Savannah DeMelo as she recovers from a concerning medical incident last week.

9. Chicago Stars FC (+1)

Chicago Stars FC remains undefeated since the summer break and presents a challenging opponent leading towards next season.

10. Houston Dash (-1)

After a strong stretch, the Dash fell to another gritty team. They need to rebound quickly, as the best teams do.

11. Utah Royals FC (+1)

Paige Monaghan is on fire for the Utah Royals and helped the team dominate their latest match.

12. North Carolina Courage (+2)

North Carolina Courage keep pushing forward, and midfielder Brianna Pinto shines as a key player in recent matches.

13. Bay FC (–)

Bay FC’s position improved largely due to goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz’s standout performances.

14. Angel City FC (-3)

Though still in playoff contention, Angel City isn’t sending strong signals as they approach the end of the regular season.
